Sufficient BBBEE level is required to do business locally in South Africa, in particular towards entities that are owned or controlled by the authorities. Without a required BBBEE level, local customers will have difficulties to get local domestic business.
The goal of BBBEE is to distribute wealth across as broad a spectrum of previously disadvantaged South African society as possible. Odfjell encourages and supports this initiative, and has welcomed Khetha Ngubane as trainee. His stay on Bow Mekka included her operations in Durban and Richardsbay.
“This has been by far an amazing experience and a dream come true to be able to sail on a chemical tanker and experience and witness the discharge, tank cleaning and loading operations”

“I would like to thank Captain Randy for an amazing stay on his ship. It was truly an honor and privilege to serve under him, and with his crew. I experienced a brotherly harmony and support for one another from every crew member towards one another. I also enjoyed the karaoke night during the recreational hours. I was also happy to use the gymnasium facilities which were of a well standard. And finally, the Chief Cook and his team made sure we have amazing delicious meals from which I believe I will be using some of the recipes back at home,” adds Ngubane.
"The officers explained to me the different roles that each deck crew member does and how important it is for each member to execute their task to enhance synergy throughout all operations. They emphasized the importance of being on the lookout for all leaking flanges, valve(s), and pump glands; and getting to know the right cargo handling gear. I was impressed by the level of trust among each member and the level of support they gave each other. They treated each other with so much respect."
"The sailing experience was certainly amazing. Prior departure at port, I, together with Second Officer (designated as Navigating Officer), made a tour in the bridge and familiarized myself with the navigational equipment. Underway, the Captain invited me to join him on the bridge so that I could witness what the officers on watch do. It was quite windy and the waves were quite high, and to see how the vessel is kept on course even during those situations was amazing."
"Like Captain Randy would say, ‘A happy ship is a SAFE ship!’ I wish Captain Randy and his crew a happy sailing."
