Statsraad Lehmkuhl arrives Cape Town

03.02.2023
Statsraad Lehmkuhl continues its One Ocean Expedition circumnavigation, and last month’s Friday the 13th turned out to be a lucky day for Cape Town as the tall ship arrived in port and welcomed visitors on board - among them colleagues from our Durban office.

From Maputo to Cape town

Statsraad Lehmkuhl arrived in Cape Town after a stopover in Maputo. With 22 sails and a crew of 25, the ship has the capacity to carry over 140 trainees per trip. It's now been a few months since ten Odfjell employees from various locations participated on board during the leg from Japan to Manila. During the Maputo to Cape Town leg of the journey, South African primary school students joined the ship's crew, researchers, and Norwegian schoolchildren on board, to learn more about the critical role of our common oceans.

Arriving in Cape Town

On her arrival in Cape Town, the ship was initially berthed at the Cruise Terminal for immigration purposes and then moved to the V&A Waterfront on Friday morning, where she was highly visible to onlookers at the V&A Waterfront.

During the vessel’s stay in Cape Town, the Royal Norwegian Embassy and partners hosted a series of events beginning on January 13 and lasting the entire week. According to an embassy spokesperson, "the events will be closely related to the overall mission and objective of the One Ocean Expedition, namely Sustainable Ocean Management. Invited guests from government, academia and business will participate in discussions on sustainable sourcing of aquatic food, the shift to green fuels in the maritime industry, the impact of microplastics on the ocean, and other critical issues.”

An eventful stay

Among the events of the week was a reception to welcome the Statsraad Lehmkuhl. Our colleagues received an invite from the Norwegian Embassy in Pretoria to join the event, along with Jakkie Lubbe of SASOL and Vusi Mazibuko of Odfjell Mazibuko SA (OMSA). They were also invited to the seminar 'Opportunities for Green Shipping in South Africa,' which featured speakers from around the world.
