Secure your account with the new Odfjell Password Policy

14.01.2019
To further protect ourselves, our colleagues, and the company against cyber attacks, a new password policy will be implemented beginning February 1st. While this will only affect Odfjell shore personnel, you can also adopt this policy to keep your online accounts secure.

Odfjell adopts a new password policy to further secure our individual and company information and prevent hackers and cybercriminals from entering our internal networks. Extend this password policy to your personal accounts to prevent yourself from becoming an easy target of cyber attacks.

The new policy is:

  • Passwords need to be 14 characters long (as opposed to the current eight). This is the password length recommended by the Norwegian National Security Authority, Microsoft, and others.

  • The password needs to include at least three of the following characters types:
  • Uppercase (A, B, C…)
  • Lowercase (a, b, c…)
  • Numbers (1, 2, 3..)
  • Special characters (#, “, @, ? etc.)

  • For Odfjell accounts, the lifetime of passwords increases to 180 days, which means a mandatory changing of passwords twice a year. Schedule a password change day for your online accounts, too.

A few tips for creating strong passwords

  • Use sentences, not just single words. Sentences are easier to remember – and difficult to guess for outsiders.
  • Use space or other characters to separate the words.
  • Substitute characters for symbols, numbers or punctuation.
  • Do not use family members or birthdays in a password.
  • Avoid using holiday + year.

Examples:
I am b0rn 1n W1en
D=gs#are#n1ce#p3ts
Th3-m00n-ar3-y3ll0w
