SC Scorpio provides aid after cyclone

Our crew on SC Scorpio offered humanitarian aid in Beira after the area was hit by a severe cyclone.
FR Waring staff, Beira Bulk Service and SC Scorpio crew join forces in providing immediate aid to the local community in Beira.

Cyclone Idai caused massive destruction in Mozambique and Zimbabwe when it hit land. The region was heavily flooded, and Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi called it “a humanitarian disaster of great proportion”.

More than 1.7 million people live in the affected area in Mozambique alone. The need for humanitarian aid is massive, with thousands of people lacking clean water and basic necessities.

SC Scorpio unloads available provision on board to share with the local community.

SC Scorpio was in the area to discharge cargo and arrived Beira in Mozambique just days after the cyclone made landfall. Together, the crew and our customer initiated immediate aid to the local community by sharing the available provision on board and donating water, rice, beans, soft drinks.

“The situation in Beira is very serious and they will need humanitarian aid in the months to come. The contribution from our ship is just a drop in the ocean, but it provided much-needed emergency nutrition for the locals in the first dramatic days after the cyclone hit. Together with other initiatives in the area, we are grateful to have made a small difference.”
