Racing for a Reason: Our team won the race and Odfjell helped raise USD 1.85 million

27.05.2025
Odfjell made a solid performance during the 2025 Adventure Race Japan: Our three-man band of runners pushed through rain, ridgelines and 20 km of volcanic tracks to cross the finish line first – comfortably ahead of a 100-strong field! The running was just the icing on the cake for the key purpose of the event: Odfjell alone raised 14,360 USD, funds that will be used to help seafarers worldwide in the coming year.

100 teams from 26 countries and a total 330 participants gathered at the Izu Peninsula in Japan. Looking at the attending companies, it shows that 55% of global shipping tonnage was represented, proving the industry’s collective commitment to people at sea.

Meet the fastest team on the course – ours!

The teams could choose between two races on the first day, the ‘Green’ and the ‘Black Dragon’ challenges. Our cuttin’ crew, Peter Schelderup, Kjell Christensen and Yngve Jakobsen, chose the hardest route, the Black Dragon of 20 km. When the starting gun fired, our trio exploded out of the blocks and never looked back.

“Teamwork carried us through every volcanic ridge, screaming knee and cramp from shoulders to toes – and still, we made it to the dancefloor for ABBA by the end of it. It was tough, but doing it alongside Peter and Yngve made it all feel easy.

A fantastic effort by the team, a great way to connect across the industry – and all for an important cause supporting the men and women who keep global trade moving,” Team leader Kjell C. Christensen summarized.

The glory is fun, but the mission is serious

The run-up to the race, with fundraising events in and out of our offices, and the race itself, are translated directly into concrete help for seafarers in need. The substantial amount raised by colleagues and partners of Odfjell made a mark: Our fundraiser was the 12th largest of the 100 attending companies.

Every dollar will fund initiatives such as:

  • MtS port-based chaplaincy
  • Family-support networks in the Philippines and India, including counselling, financial advice and emergency support
  • Upgraded seafarer centers in key ports
  • Seed money for new digital-connectivity projects
  • Welfare projects around the globe

“Well done to the team, and a big thank you to everyone who has been involved, whether you cheered from your desk, sponsored a kilometre, bought a ticket or joined the padel evening. Our collective effort proves that when this company laces up, we certainly deliver – for our industry and for the people at sea who make global shipping possible”, said VP Asia Thomas Lund.
