Practical tips to help you protect yourself from common cyber attacks.

Emails

  • Never respond to requests for personal information via email. Businesses will never ask for personal information in an email.
  • Do not enter personal information in a pop-up screen.
  • Do not click on any links listed in an email message. Copy and paste the URL into your browser to check if it is legitimate.

Personal information

  • Destroy or shred hard copies of documents that contain personal information; such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and health records.
  • Delete copies of documents that contain the similar personal information from computers and mobile devices that are no longer in use.

Data on portable storage devices

  • Only store the information that is really necessary to be transported or accessed remotely.
  • Choose a strong password for your portable storage device. A strong password should always include upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and at least one special character. Never use the same password for multiple devices or accounts.
  • Store your portable devices securely. When not in use, store devices out of sight and if possible, in a locked drawer or cabinet.

Mobile devices

  • Password-protect your mobile device.
  • Disable bluetooth when not in use.
  • Report any loss or theft to the appropriate authorities as soon as possible.

Online conduct

  • Do not participate in inappropriate conduct, such as cyberbullying, cyberstalking or rude and offensive behavior.
  • Do not impersonate someone else, or access someone else’s online account.
  • Observe copyright restrictions when downloading material from the Internet.
