Proper waste handling

17.07.2020
July key focus: ‘I always handle waste the proper way.’

As a company that relies on the oceans to carry out our business, Odfjell takes our environmental impact seriously. We comply with regulations and operate in a sustainable way.

Our policies are guided by our Sustainability strategy which is based on the United Nations Global Compact’s ten principles and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We have signed the endorsement for the Sustainable Ocean Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, and joined the 'Getting to Zero' coalition, a global alliance working to operate zero-emission vessels on deep-sea trades by 2030.

Throughout our organization, we continue to strive to reduce our waste. We have systems and processes in place to correctly segregate waste so we can further recycle the waste generated or dispose of it properly. The fleet is fitted with compliant and class approved systems to handle effluent water, wastewater, and oily water. Every vessel has a unique and comprehensive Garbage Management Plan.

With all these structures already in place, what is left is for us individuals to do what is expected of us: Familiarize ourselves with the procedures, particularly the vessel Garbage Management Plan, and follow them. Prevention of pollution begins with proper handling of waste.

By making such contribution as Odfjell'ers, not only do we contribute to the greater good that is protecting the environment. We also help secure a better environment and a better future for our children and for the next generation.

Take care of yourself, and take care of the environment.

The statement I always handle waste the proper way is derived from the Odfjell 2020 calendar. These statements are excerpts from our description of HSSE Excellence, and are recommended as themes for the General Safety Meeting.
