Odfjell'ers in Bergen gather for Digital Data Day

03.02.2023
To succeed with digitalization in a company, you need to create purposeful digital experiences for employees and customers. After all, digitalization is not all about technology, it is about what WE can do with technology.

On Thursday January 19, all Odfjell Bergen employees were invited to participate in Odfjell’s very first ‘3D: Digital Data Day’. The objective of the day was to provide an opportunity to witness firsthand the value of data and digitalization, whilst at the same time promoting our digital accomplishments to date across Ship management, Tankers, Terminals and Corporate functions.

The event was kicked off by a breakfast in the canteen and brief two-minute pitches were delivered by product owners of 15 selected digital solutions. Later, the various solutions were showcased individually in an especially set-up ‘showroom’, where colleagues could deep-dive into the tools and opportunities, share experiences, and learn more about new ways of working.

“Digitalization is more than just technology, it's about people and business processes. It was great to see this solidly confirmed at this event. We got useful updates on the applications already available but more importantly, the Digital Day sparked very valuable discussions between business areas and departments about digital opportunities and way forward.”

– Harald Fotland, CEO

The event proved to be a huge success, with more than 100 employees participating.

“Hosting a social event like this is an excellent way to boost engagement, curiosity and collaboration across business areas. To drive value from digitalization, we need to make sure that business and information technology go hand in hand. And that we are adopting new ways of working and continuously developing our digital mindset and skills. There is also the ripple effect across the organization. Improvement in one part of the business can have a significant positive impact on another. Collaboration increases the likelihood of associations between ideas, which in turn results in even more valuable solutions.”

–  Alena Pedersen, VP Corporate IT

A virtual meeting with Odfjell Terminals US (OTUS) on their Digital Transformation program was also part of the event. In 2021 OTUS launched a multi-year Digital Transformation program aimed at harnessing the latest technologies to drive down cost, boost efficiency, and provide a solid foundation for business scalability and future growth.

By enhancing and expanding current capabilities and phasing out old systems in favor of modern digital tools and solutions, OTUS will ensure the future viability of its digital platform, and its ability to fulfill future client demands. After the presentation, CSO Øistein Jensen commented: "Knowing the background and the history of where terminals were coming from, and seeing where they are now; it has been an amazing journey so far."

Among the other solutions showcased at the Digital Data Day were the Customer Portal, which allows customers to monitor their cargoes and emission data, our SCCM Platform, which centralizes management of servers, desktops, and software onboard Odfjell-managed vessels, and our Decarbonization Tool, which provides us with a high level of situational awareness while maintaining control of current and future compliance with new emission regulations. Our AI (artificial intelligence) powered cyber security solution was showcased as well, reminding everyone of personal contribution to keeping our digital working place secured.

With our wide range of in-house solutions created within and across the different departments, you could be sure to find a topic both of interest and of relevance to your line of work at the event.

“In my opinion, the most interesting aspect of the day in general was talking to people and sharing different insights and ideas, brainstorming with each other about how we can improve different processes, or add new things to our current solutions to improve them. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut, thinking your way of doing things is the right or only way, but seeing what others have done can inspire some pretty interesting thoughts and inspire new ways of doing things.”

– Tobias B. Fauske, Intern Terminals

Aside from the educational value, attendees also had the opportunity to win digital-themed prizes by participating prizes by participating in a quiz about Odfjell`s digital solutions. Thor Erik Haugland, Project Manager Port Performance, was the lucky winner of the first prize after correctly answering all of the 11 questions. The feedback after the event was very positive and we can already look forward to more events related to our digital journey.
