Odfjell in the Philippines contributes to tree-planting initiative

26.10.2022
Odfjell’ers from the Philippines planted close to 100 seedlings at the Masungi Georeserve, a conservation area some 40 kilometers east of Manila.

Forty-two volunteers from OiP were joined by Captain Luisito Cantona, one of Odfjell's esteemed seafarers.

One with nature

The activity started with almost an hour of trekking to the Batis area for the orientation, where a forest ranger introduced Masungi to the volunteers and explained the reforestation efforts done at the Sierra Madre mountain range.

The one with nature theme proved very apt, as the activity allowed Odfjell'ers to experience nature up-close: the rolling hike, paths lined by various types of trees and plants, creeks with flowing fresh water.

Scenic hike

The hike from the orientation site to the reforestation area took another hour, while the descent after lunch (and siesta) took a total of around two hours. During both the climb and the hike back to the jump-off point, Odfjell'ers were treated to magnificent views of the rainforest, albeit covered in fog.

Masungi's unique and low-impact structures also offered shelter to the Odfjell hikers, who would pause from time to time to take in the view and rest.

96 seedlings

Odfjell volunteers planted a total of 96 seedlings of hardwood trees, most of which are native to the Philippines:

  • Kamagong (Diospyros blancoi)
  • Yakal-kaliot (Hopea malibato)
  • Manggachapui (Hopea acuminat)
  • Narra (Pterocarpus indicus)

The volunteers were treated to a minalot meal—banana leaf-wrapped meal—prepared by the local community.

The day was capped off with snacks at a nearby restaurant, where colleagues looked back to the tiring yet fulfilling day.
