New fleet management solution: progress on training and preparations for rollout

14.09.2020
The new modern web-based platform is fully embedded with document management, live chat and tailored homepage to support the ongoing digitalization initiatives in Odfjell Ship Management.

As previously announced, Star IPS and fleet management system (FSM) will be replaced by a new fleet management solution over the coming months. The rollout of the new fleet management solution is conducted stepwise, with the first step planned for the middle of September. We are now in the middle of September and currently in the process of introducing each vessel’s SMT to the new solution.

For the past two weeks, the project group has conducted a series of training sessions for office users on how to use the new fleet management solution, and how to support the vessel users once the solution goes live. Through a lot of constructive discussions and valuable feedback, the quality of the end product has been ensured.

The trainings have been conducted through Microsoft Teams, which has been a very efficient way to ensure good knowledge transfer. The reception from the training participants has been positive, both on the training and on the simplicity of using the new fleet management solution.

“I participated in the online training for the new FMS while in China for the drydocking of two new vessels. We used Microsoft Teams for the training and communication, which worked well with the online login to Odfjell EAM. I was connected via mobile 4G network, and I did not experience any delays! When tested with the hotel wi-fi, the connection was also stable and everything went smoothly. When the internet got disconnected, the connection was re-established where it left off, without having to log into the program again. This new online FMS will save us time and frustration with its stability and intuitive menu.”

- Torleif Solheim, Senior Technical Superintendent

“I participated in many of the online training sessions, and thought the training was conducted in a simple and easy way through Microsoft Teams. I believe the new fleet management solution will bring a lot of value for our sailing colleagues, as well as for us in the office, by simplifying collaboration and communication. One example are the meetings; from the office we can easily review and communicate with our vessels on the minutes of meetings, and all communication will stay on the meeting record, making everything very transparent and compliant. The solution is simple to use and I look forward introducing the solution to the fleet shortly!”

- Vinicius Madruga Santos, Quality Manager Fleet Flumar

The training sessions have focused on the functions that will be included in the first-step rollout of the new fleet management solution, including:

  • Incident handling (Near Miss and Accidents)
  • Lessons Learned and News Flash
  • Minutes of Meetings for GSM and VEC (and GSSTB for Flumar)
  • Document Management of
    • Procedures
    • Training and Competence Material
    • Technical and Operational Information
  • Using the tailored Homepage tying it all together

We look forward to the rollout, and hope this will be a positive addition to our colleagues’ busy day!
