MACN Frontline Material - Tips & Tricks to Reject and Mitigate Corrupt Demands

15.03.2022
Odfjell has reported 23 facilitation payment requests or attempts in 2021 to the MACN Incident reporting. In total, a full 5465 incidents were reported by around 160 MACN members in 2020. These numbers clearly show that corrupt demands are a major challenge for our industry. MACN's data and research results are used to define focus areas for collective actions and to provide anti-corruption frontline material. The frontline material helps all MACN members to handle corrupt demands.

Odfjell has been a member of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) since 2013 and uses the MACN Frontline material on Tips & Tricks to reject and mitigate corrupt demands. These guides outline Anti-corruption Tips & Tricks developed from data collected by MACN member companies and their seafarers. MACN's data and research tells us that these tips make a difference – and on which main areas and deficiencies officials focus on when making corrupt demands. A guide for port agents explains our Anti-corruption standards and expectations to port agents.

A set of recommended best practices on commissions to third parties has been defined by a MACN Working group to provide guidance to members. Agreement to and payment of commissions requires internal procedures to ensure an adequate level of compliance. Commissions should be subject to due diligence of the third party, level of fee, and payment structure.

MACN has installed a successful HelpDesk model which includes contact details of MACN local partners in countries like India, Ukraine, Argentina and Nigeria. This HelpDesk model will be expanded to other countries within the next years.

Odfjell has been a member of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) since 2013, and we established an Anti-corruption Council in 2012. An annual risk assessment on corruption is part of our corporate risk review program, as is a mandatory Anti-corruption e-learning course in our compliance management system.
