LTI, or Lost Time Injury, refers to all injuries that prevent an employee from working the day following the injury. LTIs include Lost Workday Case1, Permanent Partial Disability2, Permanent Total Disability3 and Fatality4.
Odfjell has measured LTI frequency since the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF)* established their Guidelines in 1997.
The high LTI figures recorded within Odfjell at that time – typically 12-14 per year – were among the reasons to launch Ship Management’s Safety Culture program.
Odfjell number one Guiding Principle:
We do not compromise on safety.
The Odfjell fleet registered the most number of LTIs in 2013, with 14 incidents. Since then, the systematic work on Safety Culture has proven efficient; the LTI count dropped the following year to eight, and has not reached double digits since.
2017 has been the best year in terms of LTIs so far, with only two recorded events.
“The improvements in our safety record are very impressive, and I am convinced that this is because we truly have safety as one of our core values in Odfjell. But the positive development does not mean that we can relax. Our dedication to safety and our efforts to improve further are as important as ever.”
Kristian Mørch, CEO
The ‘Partners in Safety Program’, launched by Shell to develop a Zero Incident industry, currently forms the main set of activities in support of the Safety Culture work. On board our vessels, reflective learning and learning from incidents are included in Safety Meetings, utilizing case studies and safety videos from Shell’s vast collection of learning materials.
