Launch of newbuilding

05.12.2018
It was a moment for the Odfjell history books when the first Hudong vessel was launched in China on November 23rd. See video from the milestone event.

Odfjell’s major fleet renewal process is progressing nicely, spearheaded by the newbuildings from Hudong-Zhongua. The construction of the world’s largest stainless steel chemical tankers is well underway, and November 23rd marked the launch of the first of the four 49,000 dwt vessels.

“Our investments are part of our plan to both replace aging vessels and to ensure growth. We are making sure that we have new and modern tonnage, but at the same time we want to grow from where we are today. Our efforts are focused on making sure that Odfjell is as efficient as we can be, no matter what the markets do”.

Kristian Mørch

The Hudong vessels add highly sophisticated and technical advanced tonnage to our fleet, and is a significant step in realizing the ambitions set in our strategy, the ‘Odfjell Compass.’ When all renewal initiatives are implemented, Odfjell will have one of the world’s most eco-friendly and modern fleets, equipped to solve our customers’ present and future requirements.

Naming the vessels

The names of the four signature vessels were decided with a naming competition open for all Odfjell’ers last year. Colleagues from terminals, vessels, and offices all around the world entered the competition. The jury was Odfjell’s Executive Management by CEO Kristian Mørch, COO Harald Fotland, CFO Terje Iversen and COS Øistein Jensen.

After reviewing the 175 entries, the jury voted Chief Officer Ralph H. Tolentino’s entries on top: Bow Orion, Bow Olympus, Bow Odyssey, and Bow Optima. Bow Orion was a popular entry, also suggested by Master Rune Larsen, Engine Boy Joper T. Mangerra and Chief Officer Glenn T. Perido.

“I chose the names because it all starts with the letter “O” (Odfjell). The words define greatness, most effective, extreme and the best of their kind”.

Ralph H. Tolentino

Commenting on the winning names, the jury said:

“These names are a tribute to Odfjell’s global presence, our long travels, our expertise, service and safety levels, and the world-class ambitions of the Odfjell Compass. The names signify a connection between history and future ambitions. As Odfjell’ers have done for 103 years running, we will continue to explore and excel in coming years.”
