Introduction to Odfjell's ELITE Program

One of the most recent additions to Odfjell's extensive training portfolio is the ELITE program, aimed to provide high-quality leadership training for our seafarers.

Odfjell works to create engagement and inspire commitment, nurture leadership and leaders who are willing to take ownership and develop strong teams. This requires quality training and continuous improvement. 

The term ELITE is an acronym for Engagement, Leadership, Integrity, Training, Enablement.


These five words are a product of a careful thought process to build tailored-fit training to further develop both technical and behavioral skills of our seafarers.

This leadership concept is based on the guiding principles of the Odfjell Compass: “We have world-class ambitions in everything we do, every day”.

Three-step program

Odfjell ELITE is a three-step program designed to develop and enhance the leadership skills of our seafarers:

Elite 
Intro
Two-day introduction course for new crew members.
Objective: Train candidates in Odfjell’s core values, strategy, organization and company culture, to clarify expectations, tasks and responsibilities.
Location: Odfjell Manila
Elite 
Evo
Three-day course for Junior Officers and Petty Officers.
Objective: Provide basic leadership training in ethics, challenging conversations, mentoring, task and resource management, behavioral safety. 
Location: One day in Odfjell Manila, two days at the Norwegian Training Centre in Manila
Elite
Pro
Five-day leadership course for Senior officers due for promotion to Captains or Chief Engineers.
Objective: Build competence by table top drills and simulators, combined with close follow-up from observers and instructors. Eligible candidates to be chosen by assessment process.
Location: The Norwegian Training Centre in Manila


The introductory course, ELITE Intro, trains candidates in Odfjell's core values, strategy, organization and company culture. It also serves to clarify expectations, tasks and responsibilities among newly-hired crew. Elite Intro piloted in September 2017.

To usher seafarers in their evolution into Junior and Petty Officers, ELITE Evo, the intermediate level, provides basic leadership training in ethics, challenging conversations, mentoring, task and resource management, and behavioral safety. This three-day course, which includes a one-day internal training at Odfjell in Manila, ran its pilot class in December 2017.

The selection of candidates for the first ELITE Pro was a stringent process. First, an information letter was sent to all candidates that are up for promotion to Captain and Chief Engineer. The candidates were then scheduled for an initial assessment test, covering international regulations and conventions, risk management and shipboard administration. Those with the best scores comprised the final list of participants. The pilot class was held at the Norwegian Training Centre last 05-09 March 2018.
