Following company procedures

December key focus: “I always follow company procedures.”

As Odfjell employees, we are expected to follow company procedures. It is in fact our duty to abide by the company's rules, and our contribution in attaining its goals.

Whenever we hear the word procedure, what often comes to mind are rigid “musts” and unquestionable “should”. But if we are to look into procedures closely, we will appreciate why we have these “musts” and “shoulds” in place.

Procedures make the company compliant, and therefore allow it to operate. Our procedures are mainly derived from rules and regulations set by governing bodies. By having procedures in place, we comply with the requirements from governing bodies, international institutions, states, and customers. Our compliance means we get to do business.

Procedures ensure safe and efficient operations. These “musts” and “should” – and the “must nots and should nots” – guide us in our day-to-day tasks. We are empowered to use an equipment, handle a situation or address a slipup because we have the Shipboard Management Manual, for example, that we can always refer to. Procedures help ensure that we do things correctly.

Procedures protect you. You may not realize it right away, but procedures are mainly there to protect you – your life, your health, and your welfare.  Safe and efficient operations means no one is harmed while performing his tasks, and that we meet our clients’ needs – therefore securing our jobs. The company’s compliance means it can continue to do business, and we get to keep our jobs.

In essence, procedures are about and for us – the individuals who make up the organization. So whenever you follow a certain procedure, remember that you are not merely following a numbered list of “musts” and “shoulds”; realize that you are actually doing something for yourself – looking after your safety, and ensuring your job’s security.

Stay safe, and happy holidays.
