Flumar Brasil received a plaque signifying recognition from the Brazilian Navy for carrying out a successful rescue operation to save a fisherman.

The award was presented by the Harbor Master of the Port of São Luís (MA) who paid a visit to the vessel on October 7th.

At around 18:00 LT on October 1st, the vessel came across a Brazilian Navy helicopter in search and rescue maneuvers for a fisherman who had fallen into the sea more than three hours earlier the same day. The crew readily participated in the search together with the aircraft and the two fishing vessels that were in the region where the fisherman disappeared.

The aircraft needed to return to base an hour later, so Flumar Brasil assumed the coordination of the search and rescue operation.

With all crew on alert at 19:30, the fisherman was spotted with the help of starboard searchlight. Our vessel performed the Williamson turn, but due to sea conditions and the tiredness of the fisherman — who had been drifting on the sea without life jacker or any buoy for almost 20 hours — the rescue boat was the only way to get him out of the water.

The fisherman, a 45-year-old man, was rescued an hour later. He was brought on board and received medical attention from the ship's Nurse, Thiago de Freitas Arantes.

After the successful rescue, the vessel supplied medicine to the fishing vessel from which the fisherman came, upon learning that one of its crewmembers was suffering from burns.

The rescued fisherman was airlifted from the vessel at 1000 LT the following day. The Commander of the Superpuma 03 thanked the crew for their commitment to the successful completion of the man overboard rescue task.

“I am truly thankful and very pleased with how the Flumar Brasil crew performed. At no time were they discouraged or had doubts on how to proceed, which had been important for the success of the rescue operation.”
