The decision to test Starlink stemmed from Odfjell and Flumar's commitment to enhancing communication capabilities aboard our vessels. The successful trials have prompted a strategic move to deploy Starlink across the fleet. Presently, 17 ships are already equipped with Starlink, with plans for full fleet implementation by June this year.

Through a partnership with Marlink, Starlink will seamlessly integrate alongside existing VSAT systems, ensuring robust global communication coverage. Starlink's primary role, supplemented by VSAT as a backup, aims to bolster connectivity resilience — a vital element for efficient maritime operations.
One of the key benefits for seafarers is the substantial improvement in internet speeds, enabling smoother and more reliable utilization of cloud-based applications like the SM Portal and Compass. This enhancement is expected to enhance productivity and operational efficiency on board.
Vidar Børve, Project Manager, and Erik Hjortland both emphasized the potential of this technology to address the evolving communication needs on vessels, maintaining Odfjell’s competitive edge and adaptability in a dynamic market.
The implementation of Starlink signals a promising future for connectivity at sea, ensuring seafarers benefit from high-speed, reliable internet access, transforming their operational and personal communication experiences.
