The main theme for this year's Day of the Seafarer is gender equality, with a strong emphasis on the importance and value of women in the industry. On social media, Odfjell marked the event by honoring the men and women who work round the clock to ensure that our ships are safe, efficient and reliable.
Shore personnel and visiting seafarers, including cadets and boys undergoing training, gathered for a short program to pay tribute to the heroes of the sea.
Odfjell Philippines, Inc. (OPI) President Captain Remigio Zamora addressed the crowd sharing Odfjell's initiatives in providing more opportunities for women, ashore and at sea. He also reminded the seafarers, particularly the trainees, of the company's high regard for safety.
"Always think about safety, in everything that you do."
Captain Remigio Zamora, OPI President
VP - Head of Crewing Agnes Enesio and Manager Crew Planning Marites Villena also shared a few words. Enesio acknowledged the huge contribution of seafarers to the economy, while Villena wished the seafarers in the room safe voyage in their next contracts.
The program was concluded with a trivia game that tested everyone's knowledge of the industry.
The first Day of the Seafarer was observed in 2011, following the adoption of the Manila Amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (the STCW Convention) in 2010. It aims to recognize the contribution of seafarers to the economy and society, often at personal cost.
