Competence development for seafarers

31.01.2020
Continuous competence development is important for any company, but perhaps even more important for Odfjell. Considering our core business of storing and transporting hazardous chemicals, competent individuals are the real asset to strengthen safety and to increase our competitive advantages.

"Odfjell’s policy is to have systems in place to define, assess, maintain and develop competences. We know the importance of how each of us does our tasks and how we interact. Skills, abilities and motivation play a key role. During the last years, Odfjell has developed several courses to meet customer and internal requirements. This training is today provided by Odfjell and external suppliers like NTC, Seagull, Seascape and Thome."

- Karianne Grønseth, Manager Competence Development

Odfjell's competence development commitments

  • We shall have updated competency requirement for all officers and crew
  • We shall provide training to ensure that all seagoing personnel have the knowledge and skills to meet stationary requirements as well as customers’ expectations
  • We shall follow up individual competence development and offer designated training
  • We shall have systems in place to capture important competence elements in events and regenerate these into learning materials

Wrapping up 2019

2019 was another active year of training, with 24 different inhouse courses covering topics from Star IPS, FRAMO Basics and Explosion Protection to Drydocking, Anti-piracy and HSSE (complete below). Most courses were held more than once, and some last up to a full working week.

Leadership training

In June, the very first Odfjell Leadership Training was held for management level officers and key shore positions. This five-day course is designed for Odfjell and delivered by Seascape. The aim is to improve behavioral awareness, mental health and to identify personal leadership attributes for adjustment.

Cargo Handling Course

In November, the first Cargo Handling Course for junior officers and pumpmen was held at Thome’s training center in Manila. This training center has facilities as FRAMO tank and pump arrangement, and a Kongsberg cargo simulator.

Kickstarting a new decade of training

3,400 officers and ratings attended training in 2019, and Ship Management arranged two Officers conferences and eight Captains workshops. For 2020, the high activity level will continue. In addition to training at physical locations, the Seagull e-learning tool will be used more onboard to minimize the time the seafarer needs to spend on courses ashore. Commenting on the plans for 2020, Karianne said:

"To optimize the needed training for the seafarers, we will in 2020 and onwards continue evaluating courses and progress to digitalize Training and Performance Record books. The core focus in the coming year is on Cargo, Vetting, Leadership and safety."
