Odfjell prides in having worldclass employees who are professional, dedicated, and competent.

On board, we depend on highly competent crew to carry out our day-to-day operations, safely and efficiently. This is why we have a strong focus on competence development and training.

Our seafarers are sent to top-notch training centers or receive in-house trainings from experienced staff. This goes for both technical trainings that further their expertise, and leadership courses as they move up and take on bigger responsibilities. We also have our own cadetship program to cultivate leadership among sponsored maritime students.

These courses are further strengthened on board through schooling, drills and workshops. There are also computer-based trainings to refresh crewmembers' knowledge, and special sessions when there are new equipment or operational or safety matters that need special attention.

We do have systems in place to define, assess, maintain and develop competencies. And it should not stop there. Every day presents an opportunity to build proficiency.

Share best practices during pre-work talk. Ask for insights during debriefs. Include a discussion of your thought process when conducting task risk assessment. Encourage crewmembers to ask the important questions during safety meetings.

Learning may be an individual task, but it takes collective effort to build a competent organization.

Look after one another, and lift each other up.
