Celebrating Messman Ezequias Sabino’s four decades with Flumar

In 1984, Ezequias Sabino left his hometown Paraiba in Northeast Brazil heading for Rio de Janeiro in pursuit of a maritime career, supported by his wife and children back home. Today, the esteemed Messman marks an impressive milestone – 40 years of service with Flumar.

Looking back at where it all started, Ezequias recalls how difficult it was to get a job in Rio de Janeiro's competitive labour market. Despite Flumar initially having no vacancies, his persistence and determination paid off in February 1984 when the company offered him a contract. This marked the beginning of a four-decade-long commitment to Flumar and Odfjell.

At the age of 18, he set sail on his first voyage aboard the N/T Chuy. Unfamiliar with the intricacies of tanker vessels, he eagerly took on the challenge and soon discovered his passion for the seafaring life. With each subsequent ship, including Jatobá, Angelim, Jatai, Japeri, Jacarandá, Aratu, Araucária, and finally Flumar Brasil, he gathered important insights that influenced both his personal life and career.

In 1999, the collaboration between Odfjell and Flumar brought about substantial improvements onboard. Ezequias recalls the development of a workplace culture that encouraged growth, prioritized safety, and promoted camaraderie. These sentiments are echoed by Captain Raymond Gjendemsjø, who remarks:

“With 40 years of committed service, Ezequias exemplifies the type of work environment we aim to cultivate: one that encourages long-term connections, and that rewards commitment. We are proud to have Ezequias as part of our seafaring family. Our heartfelt thanks, and congratulations!”

Reflecting on his journey, Ezequias highlights the impact of the vessel Jatai, where despite challenging conditions, the crew formed a close-knit family. However, it is on the Flumar Brasil that he has spent the majority of his time—a vessel he now considers his maritime home and the place where he plans to complete his final embarks.
