When Bow Sea and her crew sailed to the Far East through the Pacific Ocean a few months back, the officers and engineers on board organized what they called the Inter-Pacific Games. The activity was so successful that Captain Marvin Marmolejo, Master of Bow Sea, initiated a second season as the vessel was bound to transit the Pacific again on its way back to United States ports. And so the Captain summoned the assistance of his Officers and Engineers.
The second season of Bow Sea's Inter-Pacific Games, themed Empowering and engaging everyone towards common success and excellence, was held on Saturday April 13th. Chief Engineer Jose Peña formally opened the event which featured four competing teams.
The games have been upgraded to train the mind and cultivate deeper camaraderie. Everyone stepped up, rose to the challenge and displayed a remarkable sense of teamwork, making the activity really worthwhile.
After the awarding of prizes to the winners and the giving of tokens to the rest of the participants, Captain Marmolejo delivered a closing remark, highlighting everyone’s cooperation and good sportsmanship.
Only one team was awarded the champion title, but everyone ended as a winner with all the lessons and fun gained from the experience.
“Being able to work with my colleagues in a group in this setting increased our morale and encouraged creativity among us. Thanks to activities like this, we were able to find time to relax and enjoy on board.”
– Vincent Malupangue, Electrician Trainee
“The games we played developed my self-esteem and gave me the opportunity to interact with every crewmember. These in turn helped me become more trusting and build better relationships with my collagues on board. I appreciate that we were able to do all these while having fun.”
– Fidel Ilagan, Jr., Able Seaman
“The activity gave us all the opportunity to improve our teamwork while having fun. More importantly, I was able to know myself better and identify my strengths and weaknesses during the games.”
– Michael Allen Bonita, Wiper
While the activity taught a different lesson for everyone, there is something that all Bow Sea crewmembers agree on:
No matter where you are or what you do, teamwork is essential in a group's success. Every member plays an important part, and has the capacity to take on a leadership role. Each individual also has the capability to empower and engage the rest of the group towards success and excellence.
