Bow Capricorn rescues refugees at sea

17.02.2022
The Captain and crew on Bow Capricorn rescued eight men underway through the Yucatan Canal, west of Cuba on the morning of February 9.

The refugees had been at sea for nearly a week, and their two small boats were close to sinking in the rough weather. They were helped on board Bow Capricorn and provided dry clothes and food. Fortunately, they were all in good health despite the dramatic circumstances.

As per procedure, Odfjell’s Emergency Response Team was mustered to assist the Captain and coordinate with the relevant authorities. On the morning of February 10, the refugees were taken ashore by the Mexican Coast Guard, and Bow Capricorn resumed her voyage towards Panama.

“I want to commend Captain Ruben Q. Hilario and his crew for their professionalism in handling this situation, and the care they gave to the eight refugees. This is a prime example of seamanship at its best. It is in our core to save people in distress at sea, and I am proud to see that Odfjell’ers take this responsibility to heart.”
