‘Better solutions’: Seeking synergies

03.03.2020
One of the key points in the Odfjell Compass strategy is ‘Operational excellence’ in developing synergies between tankers and terminals. Exploring these opportunities is continuous work, and recently a group from Odfjell Tankers and Odfjell Terminals Houston (OTH) gathered to define targets and goals.

The Odfjell Compass outlines the following targets for operational excellence:

  • Improve operational efficiencies for Odfjell and our customers
  • Improve predictability for Odfjell and our customer services
  • Reduce berth congestion at Odfjell Terminals
  • Reduce port time and uncertainty for Odfjell Tankers
  • Improve customer and own competitiveness in a commoditized market
  • Ongoing improvement programs and focused on extracting synergy potential between tankers and terminals

The project to explore synergy opportunities between Tankers and Terminals is named ‘Better Solutions’, and the gathering in Houston was the first full-day workshop involving OTH. Similar workshops have already been conducted both at our terminals in Korea and Antwerp. The purpose is to share insight into each other's businesses, and continue the discussion on how to realize potential synergies between tankers and terminals at both a commercial and operational level.

"Synergies between our tankers and terminal business extend far beyond targeting joint customers. Effective sharing of market intelligence, benchmarking and helping each other operate more efficiently all represent very tangible opportunities to further capitalize on our platform. At the same time, it is important to be mindful of the business characteristics and idiosyncrasies of each business unit."

Adrian Lenning, Global Head of Odfjell Terminals

At the workshop in Houston, Global Head of Tanker Trading, Bjørn Hammer, and Global Director Commercial & Business, Yann Bigot, presented Odfjell Tankers and OTH respectively, focusing on the organization and the competitive landscape, strategy and contract dynamics. The group discussion revolved around three key points:

  • Operational performance
  • Information sharing
  • Joint customers

The workshop concluded with several defined actions for each of these key points.

"It was a very positive meeting. Creating synergies is a complex issue, and it is highly beneficial to get together to define targets and realistic goals for our cooperation moving forward. By establishing a joint foundation for how we share information, cooperate and plan, I believe that we lay solid grounds for succeeding."

Bjørn Hammer, Global Head of Tanker Trading

In addition to the teams from Tankers and OTH, CEO Kristian Mørch and Director Kaushik Ramki from JV partner Northleaf Capital also took part in the workshop.
