Best performing ships on near miss reporting

21.05.2021
The three best performing ships on near miss reporting will be selected every quarter.

Ship Management has launched an initiative to increase the number and quality of near miss reporting in Fleet Bergen and Fleet Flumar. Near miss reporting has proved to be a powerful tool in sharing knowledge and experience that helps avoid reoccurrence of incidents.

Each quarter, beginning the first quarter of 2021, the three best performing ships on near miss reporting will be selected by the Ship Management Section Leader group based on a combination of high frequency of reporting and significance of the reports.

The top three performers every quarter will be featured in Bow News and will be awarded with 100 USD added to their welfare fund.

The initiative will run for the entire 2021 and will be reviewed by year-end.

Moreover, this recognition has reassured me that the company’s values reflect what we value on board. Reporting quality near misses is essential because it helps us to learn from them and improve more. It will always serve as a reminder for us to uphold high standards that prevent accidents on board.”

Captain Luisito Cantona, Master

“We are thankful for the recognition of our efforts in reporting and in prioritizing the safety culture on board ships and during onshore operations. It was a group effort and we are glad that we are appreciated. This gives more motivation for the crew to report and utilize stop work authority when needed in order to avoid accidents. We encourage everyone to think safe, report more near misses, give more focus in detecting weak signals, and be more proactive towards safety.”

Krypton Roy Sudario, Third Officer

“Reporting near misses is essential in avoiding reoccurrence and preventing accidents. We can always learn a lesson from any near miss. And we can also try to prevent near misses by wearing proper PPE, using the appropriate tools, and ensuring that we are well-rested and can safely finish our job.”

Simone Sien Aliman, Engine Cadet

“Near miss reporting serves as a wake-up call that shows the potential and possibility of an accident to happen. It provides us with the opportunity to learn, and the knowledge to prevent future accidents. It also helps us understand how to do our job with utmost care and without compromising our or our colleagues’ safety. I appreciate that our efforts to be consistent with adhering to our safety procedures are recognized.”
