The campaign engaged crew members through three structured sessions, each addressing a key aspect of safety and teamwork:
The Deadly Dozen
The crew analyzed 12 common safety hazards through an engaging video and group discussions. This session helped crew members identify risks arising from human factors such as fatigue, distraction, and situational awareness.
Real-Life Case Studies
Real incidents from Odfjell vessels were reviewed to explore safety lapses and how a Buddy System could have prevented them. Group discussions allowed participants to pinpoint unsafe behaviors and suggest practical preventive measures.
Buddy System Survey
Teams provided valuable feedback on formalizing the Buddy System and shared their insights with the HSSEQ department. The feedback will be used to guide the development of a more effective framework for fostering collaboration and mutual responsibility for safety.
“Two-gether makes a difference”
The campaign highlighted that "Two-gether makes a difference," demonstrating how pairing crew members reduced incidents, enhanced resilience, and created a supportive environment. The Buddy System also helped new crew members acclimatize, strengthened camaraderie, and contributed to operational efficiency.
“This campaign reflects Odfjell's commitment to continuous improvement in safety practices. By empowering crew members to look out for one another, we reinforce our collective responsibility for maintaining a safe and productive workplace,” said Compliance and Competence Manager Captain Marlo Salayo.
HSE Manager Arve Matland shared: “The insights and feedback from this campaign are instrumental in refining Odfjell’s safety culture. The involvement of the Ship Management team has been crucial in engaging the crew, and we deeply appreciate the thoughtful feedback shared. This will be thoroughly reviewed and applied to strengthen our procedures and processes, ensuring safety remains not just a practice, but a way of life aboard every Odfjell vessel.”
Our crew members aboard Bow Orion also shared their thoughts:
“The Q4 Safety Campaign truly justifies the saying, ‘No man is an island.’ Through this training, we’ve learned the value of a buddy system onboard, where people look out for each other and improve workplace safety. Indeed, ‘Two-gether makes a difference.’”
– CHO Richard Grajales
“The Q4 Safety Campaign is more than just a safety initiative—it fosters stronger workplace relationships and cultivates a positive organizational culture. Stronger together, safer onboard—buddy up for success!”
– 2OFF Frank Arnell Hembra
“The Q4 Safety Campaign reminds us that safety isn’t just about protecting ourselves but also our shipmates. By committing to a culture of safety, we ensure smooth operations and more enjoyable time at sea. A safe ship is truly a happy ship!
This campaign highlights the importance of promoting a culture of safety through regular training and drills. When every crew member is familiar with equipment and prepared to handle emergencies, we can act quickly as a team, minimize risks, and ensure safety for all.”
